Spring Tour de Hives

The Tour de Hives will engage, educate and enchant you with a first-hand look at honeybees in hives across the city, guided by the humans who tend them. On Sunday, June 18th, 2017, from 9am until noon, join us for a bicycle tour of apiaries in Mattapan and Jamaica Plain followed by a bring-your-own-picnic lunch at the Boston Nature Center. Come celebrate the bees with us!

APIARIES FEATURED ON THE TOUR INCLUDE

Boston Nature Center Observation Hive: Founder of classroom hives and observation hive extraordinaire, Jeff Murray, will give you a close up look into the social life of bees.

Boston Nature Center Ware and Top Bar Hives: Organizer of BABA’s Bee School, Bill Perkins, will discuss two types of backyard beehives.

Leland Community Garden Langstroth Hive: Beekeeper Larry V. will discuss what it’s like starting a hive from a package of bees.

Paul Gore Garden Langstroth Hive: Beekeeper Leonard L. will discuss urban beekeeping and finding a good place to keep bees in the Boston Area.

Allandale Farm Langstroth Hives: Farmers and beekeepers Itzi and Kristin will present on beekeeping on the farm.

Dues-paying BABA members: $25/rider*

Non-members: $35/rider*

To guarantee a spot on the tour, please register online here. Check-in will be at the Boston Nature Center (500 Walk Hill St, Mattapan, MA 02126) starting at 8:45 am. There, you will get your tour t-shirt, join your group, and start the ride! There is parking at the Boston Nature Center. If there are spots available, we will also take day-of registrations in cash or check.

*There is no extra charge if you bring a child in a bike seat.

BYO PICNIC LUNCH
After a full morning of cycling and bees, all groups will gather back at the Boston Nature Center for a bring-your-own picnic lunch and a chance to mingle!

Please bring a bag lunch, bicycle, helmet, and water bottle! The total cycling distance is ~10 miles. Light snacks will be provided throughout the tour and at lunch.
